ELOPE IN 2020
Eloping is the new black. This year has seen alot of weddings cancelled or postponed due to Covid-19 and in turn, this has seen a rise of elopements in 2020.
I was recently featured (alongside videographer Ashlee Jensen), in a story by Lacee Froeschl in the local Sunshine Coast Daily and Courier Mail newspapers about the rise in elopements in 2020 and the impact it’s had on the wedding industry during Covid.
I’ve been a full-time wedding photographer for over 8 years. Before that I was a press photographer for many years. On average I shoot 36 weddings a year, 2020 was looking to be my most successful year with over 40 weddings booked as of January 2020.
The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s leading destination weddings locations. I had weddings booked this year with couples from Canada, England, Singapore, NZ, as well as every state of Australia. When COVID hit, I lost all my weddings from overseas and interstate. Some weddings have been postponed to next year, but others had to be cancelled due to the uncertainty of when travel can start up again and easing of restrictions.
There has been a huge jump in the number of elopements this year and it’s all due to COVID-19. Elopements have been a great alternative for couples getting married in 2020. Some are eloping this year with as little as 2 witnesses/guests, and will enjoy a bigger party next year.
